Welcome, Class of 1960 Reidsville High School
Classmates' Notes
With our reunion over, what happens to our Web site, <ReidsvilleHighSchoolClassOf1960.com>?
It will remain where and as it is for at least a month, until December 6, 2010 or a little later, so you can more easily see pictures taken at the reunion. (Pictures will be added to our website as they come in.) Then it will be parked on <TruthForHealthyLiving.org> perhaps until a few months before our next reunion. After December 6 th, you can easily look at all the pages, send news or comments and anything else you can do now. But unlike any other place it can be put, our website will still be found by the search engines and seen without restrictions and at no cost to anyone. In addition, none of the Webmaster’s work will be lost. IMPORTANT: You will access our class website by mouse-clicking on the picture of our RHS golden lion mascot when you Web surf to <TruthForHealthyLiving.org>.
Notes: Please email-attach to <rlovelace2@triad.rr.com> reunion-related and any other pictures. Also send any future concerns, questions and corrections to these notes to the same email address. Classmates’ notes are in the order we received them. When a note wasn’t given to us, we provided some contact information.
|
| Our honored guest is Mr. John Gentry, our RHS social studies teacher. |
|
Special thanks go to our classmate, John Wayne Driscoll, who so willingly applied his Web-search skills to help locate and learn more about “lost” classmates. |
|
|
|
If we thanked all the other terrific and talented classmates who contributed so much to making this reunion successful, these notes would be unmanageable. |

Charlotte Haynes McFall 919-942-4022 quintsgm@nc.rr.com |
Charlotte is retired and wrote, "I moved to Chapel Hill in 1966 and was employed at the University as a departmental secretary, a school registrar, executive secretary for a foundation, and as a departmental manager. Haven't done anything noteworthy in years." I (Webmaster) disagree with the last part of what Charlotte wrote. She made a note worthy and much-appreciated contribution to our RHS Class of 1960 Web site and our reunion. |

I have pursued what she and I had intended to do and that's travel. Ihave visited much of the western US and plan on seeing as much of the rest as I can. We have traveled across the country and to Europe, but there are many places we would like to go. I guess we better hurry up. I play bridge, read, baby sit and walk the dog or the dog walks me. I do some painting, take some emeritus courses at UNCG, work crossword puzzles and sudoku. I must confess I am pretty lazy, but it suits me." |

Thanks to all of those who have worked so hard to make this 50-year class reunion a huge success and lot of fun, which I know it will be. God bless!” |

As part of my training, I spent a year in Idaho where I met my wife, Deanne. We have three girls, an adopted son and nine grandchildren. After the Navy, I worked in Columbia, MD providing training services for commercial power plants and a facility in Idaho Falls, where I was a plant operator, trainer and training manager. I was able to attend college in the evenings to get a degree in corporate training ... was awarded an employee scholarship and served as a project manager. As that work was winding down, I was invited to give presentations at the Harvard School of Medicine and elsewhere on several occasions. Since retiring in 1998, I have been spending a lot of time tracing family history and publishing books on my and my wife's families. I enjoy serving in my church where I have been a Bishop, High Councilor and Sunday school teacher ... have served as Executive Secretary for the past 11 years ... also serve in the Idaho Falls Temple one day every week. I have been able to travel, but you don't get to see much from a submarine that stays submerged 80 days at a time. In 1988 Deanne and I went to New Zealand at Christmas. I told a friend that I was running a taxi service. He wanted my business card so he could call me. My response was that my taxi service was called 'Grandpa's Taxi' and the only customers were my grandchildren. They are growing up and don't need me to drive them around very much any more. I'm sorry that I will not be attending our 50-year reunion." |

Garry Soyars 804-275-8430 karolyngarry@comcast.net |
Garry lives in Richmond, and is attending with his wife, Karolyn. He is retired from work as a mechanical engineer with American Tobacco. "Following graduation from State, I married Karolyn, of Yanceyville, and we moved to Richmond, where we remain after 46 years. Karolyn has a degree in social service and worked in that field until retirement. We have two sons. Blake (name stolen from Joyce Hawkins) lives in Austin,TX and Ted here in Richmond. Both are married but regrettably without children. We are active in our neighborhood Methodist Church. We also volunteer at a local elementary school. We serve with the Chesterfield County Christmas Mother Program where Karolyn again runs the show while I use my technical background to sort canned food. ;-) I think the secret to a long, long, long marriage is to not be around each other too much. To that end, Karolyn is a fanatic about tennis and loves talking to anyone and everyone on the phone. Gardening and golf keep me busy. Interests we share are eating out with various groups of friends ... about four days a week (since our oven 'died' in 1986) and traveling. We go anywhere as long as it's with friends. Special trips include cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean and a European river cruise. European and American land vacations were also enjoyed. It's hard to believe that 50 years ago going to Myrtle Beach was my wildest dream. Where have the years gone?" |

Sandra Groff Page cpage241@bellsouth.net |
Sandra lives in Charlotte and will attend the BIG 50 reunion November 6th in Reidsville. We both spent several years in educational settings finishing degrees: mine in English Education and his in Theology. In 1968 he began his first pastorate and I became a pastor's wife....I assure you that was never my plan. Even though we kept a full schedule, I always found time to long distance run and completed the Huntsville, AL Rocket City Marathon. Although I no longer run, I walk daily and attend exercise classes. Charles and I had the wonderful experience of parenting two sons: David who lives in Madison, WI and Robbie who lives (thankfully) closer to me. There are five absolutely terrific grandsons ranging in ages from 20 to 13 weeks. What a great opportunity our Reunion Committee is providing for us in November...many thanks and see you then." |

Our two daughters have been so lucky to have their grandparents all of this time and now their children have had the wonderful experiences they share with them. John and I enjoy our families and all our family times. Trips to the NC coast and mountains are so filled with many wonderful memories. Retirement has been full of good times and happy memories. We are most proud of our three precious grandchildren. They have brought us so much joy. We are looking forward to seeing our classmates at this most important class reunion and making new memories. We thank the committee for all the work it has done. We are looking forward to seeing you on the 6th of November." |

I am 'Nana' to them and very much enjoy them and my life retired. Besides family, Wake Forest ball games and other things, I go to the "Y" and also participate in a group that sings and dances in nursing homes. Gives me a great feeling to see the faces of older folks light up when we're singing a song they recognize. I plan to be at the reunion early and hope to see all of you there." |

During that time Norman and I went our separate ways. I left Zarn and went to Equity Meats. I worked there until Weldon and I married in 1998. We have lived in Spring Lake since. My hobbies are doing crosswords, selling Avon and taking care of Weldon. We have 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild with another on the way." |

Margaret Worsham Smith 407-339-1719 minimarg1@embarqmail.com |
Margaret lives in Fern Park, FL and is pleased to report, "I'm retired and loving it. Have been married to my husband, Frank, for 50 years. We have three great kids, Duane, Lisa, Teri, and have 5 beautiful granddaughters ages 10 to 17. I was a manager for an orthodontist for 21 years and did some traveling for my job and for fun. I have not been abroad but plan to go to France on a Christmas cruise in 2011. My hobby is creating miniatures and this year acting as chair person for our local club fundraiser. I look forward to seeing everyone and remembering old times." |

Linda Wagoner & Roger Jones 804-594-7273 rogerlinda@comcast.net |
Linda and Roger live in Midlothian and will attend the reunion. Roger is retired and Linda still works. After RHS graduation, Roger went to NCSU where he earned his Ph.D. in engineering and was employed by AT&T for 24 years as a Senior Development Engineer. He retired in 1995 and discovered that there is life after academic and corporate life. After graduation, Linda went to UNC-G and its School of Medical Record Library Science. She has been self-employed for the past 36 years as a Health Information Management Consultant primarily in long term care facilities. “As for the really important news -- having briefly dated in high school and college, we were reunited when Roger was pursuing his doctorate and Linda was working in Durham. Roger 'popped the question' and we married in 1971 and have been life partners for 39.5 years! We lived in Greensboro for almost three years before moving to Richmond in 1974 and to Midlothian (near Richmond) in 1999. It has been our privilege to enjoy traveling the world and from our many experiences we know that we live in the greatest country on earth. We continue to have an abiding faith in our country and the character and strength of our fellow citizens. A favorite quote of ours seems appropriate as we look forward to celebrating: 'Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting, ‘WOW…What a ride!’” |

I was an Airborne Avionics Systems Technician, which means that I repaired navigational equipment in cargo and fighter aircraft. I met my wife, Kevie, while in Massachusetts and married her 45 years ago. We have three children, 2 sons and a daughter ... five grand kids who live in the Charlotte area. There are four girls (including triplets) and a boy. We have lived in the Charlotte area 30 years. I worked in banking equipment for many years and now work as a Realtor/ Broker with the Allen Tate Company. Kevie has worked many years in the administrative field, and now works at the City of Charlotte Real Estate Division. We both enjoy traveling, reading, and golf (me) tennis (her)." |

Phil Watlington 434-792-2488 philw1@comcast.net |
Phil didn't stay in our class past the 10 th grade because he didn't care for school. He did graduate in '61 and goes to their reunions. Phil says he is pleased to be invited to be with us and plans to attend our reunion. Our classmate who recently spoke to Phil and knows him better says, "He is a really great guy with a true radio voice." Phil still lives in Danville and isn't yet retired from his work at WBTM/WAKG. He wrote to us saying, "I've been working in radio in Danville since 1962 and am looking forward to retirement. I love to travel, but thus far have been fairly limited. Have visited Hawaii 3 times, and went to Tahiti once. Looking forward to a Mediterranean Cruise next year. I have a passion for anything Egyptian, and look forward to visiting Cairo, the pyramids, etc." |

We have always enjoyed spending most of our time with our family and serving in our church. There is no greater joy for us than to be with our children and their families." |

Webmaster’s note: I dedicated my work to Mary Lou Warf Willis. This is a parting gift given because I believe she would like it. > |
It is absolutely crucial that we shift more than retire. Because we care about ourselves, our families, each other and more, we very much need to move our focus from work to wellness. That means powerfully protecting our health. With that in mind and respectfully, diligently use the free, entirely without-strings-attached, and unique wellness information available where our RHS Class of 1960 Web site is being parked on-line. |
